Case Study: How Broadlake Built a Trusted Carbon Baseline with Novata

Broadlake leveraged Novata's Carbon Navigator to strengthen emissions data quality and portfolio reporting.

Broadlake is a privately owned investment group with 11 healthcare and social care businesses operating across Ireland, the UK, South Africa, and India. The firm is guided by its “3X, 10X” vision: tripling the size of the business while increasing its positive impact tenfold.

As Head of Impact, Daragh Anglim works with leaders across Broadlake’s portfolio to embed impact into business strategy and help each company measure progress against its goals. When it came to carbon reporting, he recognized the need to move beyond estimates and build a consistent, reliable view of emissions across the portfolio.

The Challenge

Prior to Novata, much of the organization’s carbon reporting relied on estimates rather than detailed operational data. Without consistent information across properties, suppliers, and portfolio companies, it was difficult to understand where emissions originated, establish credible baselines, or confidently measure progress over time.

“We honestly didn’t really have a consistent way of measuring it,” said Daragh. “We struggled with understanding the scope and scale of our emissions.”

The Solution: Replacing Estimates with Trusted Carbon Data

Broadlake selected Novata, and specifically the Carbon Navigator, to bring greater consistency, accuracy, and visibility to carbon reporting across its portfolio.

Using Carbon Navigator, Broadlake’s portfolio companies began collecting emissions data at a much more granular level, from individual properties and company vehicles to supplier purchasing patterns and Scope 3 emissions. For an organization operating numerous residential care facilities, for instance, that level of detail was particularly valuable.

More importantly, the platform changed how the portfolio teams approached data collection.

“It forced people to go and find the actual data,” Daragh explained. “It resulted in a level of accuracy and attention to detail that we didn’t have in the past.”

As portfolio teams gathered and validated information, they uncovered gaps they hadn’t previously recognized. By verifying data at the source instead of relying on estimates, they improved reporting quality across each business while giving Broadlake a clearer, portfolio-wide view of its operations and emissions.

Results

Two years into its Carbon Navigator journey with Novata, Broadlake has seen measurable improvements in both the quality of its data and the conversations happening across the organization.

“I now have a clearer understanding of where the larger-scale impact of our emissions sit,” Daragh said.

Broadlake also wanted a solution that could support its broader impact strategy. Every business in the firm’s portfolio is B Corp certified, so the team needed a platform that combined standardized reporting with the flexibility to tailor questionnaires to its own priorities while supporting future international growth.

Key Outcomes

  • 50–70% improvement in emissions data quality year over year, giving Broadlake greater confidence in its reporting and decision-making.
  • Expanded reporting participation across the portfolio, growing from approximately four or five businesses to seven, with all eight portfolio companies expected to complete reporting in the current cycle.
  • A clearer view of portfolio-wide emissions, helping identify where the largest impacts exist and where reduction efforts should be focused.
  • A stronger foundation for targets, supported by more accurate, granular emissions data.

Looking Ahead

As Broadlake continues pursuing its 3X, 10X vision, trusted sustainability data has become an important part of measuring progress.

With a trusted carbon baseline now in place, the firm is using Carbon Navigator to strengthen accountability across its portfolio, inform targets, and better understand how its environmental impact evolves as the business grows.

“It’s a great way for us to track and demonstrate our commitment to 10X on our 3X, 10X journey,” Daragh said. “It’s a great tool for capturing all that data in one place.”
